Cats beat Brookland, Nettleton,
drop game against Valley View

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats opened the 2016 baseball season last week with three games at Nettleton's Raider Field in Jonesboro.


The Bobcats defeated the Brookland Bearcats 8-3 on March 2.

The game was tied 3-3 until Walnut Ridge scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Bobcats added three runs in the fifth inning.

Offensively for Walnut Ridge, Will Weir went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Drake Smelser added two doubles, and Luke Wall had two RBIs.

Weir pitched a complete game, allowing three runs and recording four strikeouts.

Mustangs record baseball wins

The Hoxie Mustangs started the 2016 baseball season on a winning note, routing Tuckerman 14-3 on March 1 at Tuckerman.

Wesley Wright led the Mustangs on the mound and at the plate. The starting pitcher went five innings and allowed five hits while notching a dozen strikeouts. Offensively, Wright went 3-for-4, including two doubles and drove in four runs.

Lady Hounds advance to 2A state quarterfinals

Alyssa Nichols scored a game-high 21 points in leading the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds to a 57-43 victory over the Poyen Lady Indians in the first round of the 2A State Basketball Tournament Thursday at Marmduke.

The Lady Greyhounds jumped on Poyen early, holding a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Sloan-Hendrix continued their domination in the second period, stretching the advantage to 31-10 at the intermission. The Lady Hounds led 43-22 after three quarters and held off Poyen in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Lady Cats beat Piggott

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats opened the 2016 softball season with a 4-3 win over Piggott's Lady Mohawks on Feb. 29 at Walnut Ridge.

Baylee Haskins tossed a seven-inning complete game for Walnut Ridge, allowing three runs on five hits, while recording 10 strikeouts.
