Bobcats are district runners-up
WR, S-H teams advance to regionals
Austin Williams scored 27 points to lead the White County Central Bears to a 54-52 victory over the Walnut Ridge Bobcats in the boys final of the 2A-2 District Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Salem. A three-point shot by the Bobcats' Kenzie Flippo rattled out at the buzzer.
Flippo finished with 17 points, and Kyle Nunley added 15 for the Bobcats.
Despite the loss, Walnut Ridge is still ranked number-two in the state in Class 2A. The Bobcats advance to the 2A North Regional Tournament at Imboden, where they will face East Poinsett County on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
WR - Tuckerman
Walnut Ridge earned its spot in the finals by defeating Tuckerman 72-57 in a semifinal game on Thursday.
Tuckerman led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter, before the Bobcats rallied to take a 34-32 halftime lead. Walnut Ridge stretched the lead to 54-42 in the third quarter, and continued to pull away in the final period.
Flippo led Walnut Ridge with 17 points, all in the second half. Nunley finished with 12 points, and Spencer Wilson added 11. Luke Wall finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
White Co. Central defeated Sloan-Hendrix 68-58 in the other boys semifinal on Thursday.
Sloan-Hendrix led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, but WCC outscored the Greyhounds 18-8 in the second period to lead 26-21 at the intermission. The Bears pushed the lead to 50-37 after three quarters, and held off Sloan-Hendrix's rally in the final period.
The Greyhounds had three players out with injury, and a fourth went out in second quarter and returned in the fourth. WCC also had a big advantage at the charity stripe, hitting 20-of-32, while Sloan-Hendrix was just five-of-14.
Tyler Murphy had 17 points and five assists, and Hunter Stallings added 14 points for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds will play Earle in the first round of the 2A North Regional Tournament on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at McCurley Gym.
Tuckerman - S-H
Sloan-Hendrix's Lady Greyhounds fell to Tuckerman 45-43 in the semifinals of the girls tournament on Thursday.
Tuckerman led 25-19 at halftime and 32-23 at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Hounds fourth-quarter rally fell short, as the Lady Bulldogs advanced to the title game.
Alyssa Nichols scored a game-high 16 points for Sloan-Hendrix.
The Lady Greyhounds will advance to the regional tournament on their home floor, where they will face East Poinsett County on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats fell to the top-seeded Salem Lady Greyhounds 70-43 in the other girls semifinal game.
Salem jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, leading 36-26 at halftime and 54-35 after three quarters.
Megan Jared led Walnut Ridge with 17 points, while Emma Rice chipped in 10 points.
WR - Pangburn
The Walnut Ridge girls advanced to the semifinal by defeating Pangburn 53-49 in a first-round matchup on Feb. 16. That victory also clinched a berth in the regional tournament for the Lady Bobcats.
Walnut Ridge trailed Pangburn 34-31 after three quarters, but staged a fourth-quarter rally to edge the Lady Tigers.
Rice led the Lady Bobcats with 14 points. Whitney Rider finished with 12 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Jared had 11 points, and Sunnie Cunningham added 10 points.
The Lady Cats will play Earle today at 7 p.m. in the regional tournament at Imboden.
