College City, WR effort
to consolidate continues
The effort to consolidate College City and Walnut Ridge continues after a kick-off ceremony and signing of petitions held Feb. 9 at Williams Baptist College. The petitions request that a special election be held to vote on the consolidation of the two towns.
The City of College City will be hosting a town hall meeting for residents of College City on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Sloan Science Center at Williams Baptist College. The meeting will allow residents an opportunity to discuss their perspective and ask questions surrounding the proposed merger with Walnut Ridge.
For the issue to be put to a vote, petitions must be signed by 15 percent of the number of voters in the last mayoral election for each town. For College City, that number is nine, while Walnut Ridge needs approximately 263 signatures.
Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp reported Tuesday that the Walnut Ridge petition already had slightly over the minimum required, but those representing the petitioners want to have extra signatures in case some are not accepted. The petition is available at the Walnut Ridge Mayor's Office for those voters wishing to sign it.
"I think people are glad to have the opportunity to vote on it," Snapp added.
Once complete, petitions will be presented to the city clerk of each town for validation before going to the city councils of each town. A special election will then be held.
