Bobcats claim 2016 county title
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats outlasted the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds 77-74 to capture the senior boys title at the 2016 Lawrence County Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Sharum Gymnasium in Walnut Ridge.
The game was tied 15-15 at the end of the first quarter before the Bobcats eased into a 31-27 advantage at the intermission. Walnut Ridge stretched the lead to 57-48 at the end of the third quarter. Sloan-Hendrix mounted a rally in the final period, outscoring Walnut Ridge 26-20, but the comeback fell short as the Bobcats held on for the title.
Lady Mustangs are county champions
Sydney Gillham scored 26 points, including eight in overtime, to lead Hoxie's Lady Mustangs to a hard-earned 62-58 win over the Sloan-Hendrix Lady Greyhounds in the senior girls final of the 2016 Lawrence County Basketball Tournament Saturday night at Walnut Ridge's Sharum Gymnasium.
Hoxie led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter before Sloan-Hendrix fought back in the second period to tie the contest 22-22 at halftime. The teams remained tied 35-35 after three quarters and 51-51 at the end of regulation. Hoxie outscored the Lady Greyhounds 11-7 in the overtime period to claim the tourney championship.
Cats clinch conference title
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat senior boys basketball team clinched the 2A-2 regular-season championship with a 78-63 win over the Tuckerman Bulldogs on Feb. 2 at Tuckerman. The Bobcats ran their conference record to a perfect 11-0 and improved to 20-2 overall with the win.
Walnut Ridge led 17-12 at the end of the first quarter before outscoring the Bulldogs 24-8 in the second period to take a commanding 41-20 lead into halftime. The Bobcats led 53-37 after three quarters.
Hoxie girls clinch title
The Hoxie Lady Mustangs clinched a share of the 3A-3 Conference basketball title with a 65-54 win over Manila on Feb. 3 at Manila.
Hoxie led 29-19 at halftime and expanded the lead to 43-30 at the end of the third quarter.
Sydney Gillham recorded 20 points and 16 rebounds. Devyn Pollard scored 15 points, and Krista Vankirk added 11 points for the Lady Mustangs.
S-H sweeps Pangburn
The Sloan-Hendrix basketball teams hosted 2A-2 conference foe Pangburn on Friday night at Imboden.
In the senior girls contest, four Sloan-Hendrix players scored in double figures as the Lady Greyhounds downed the Lady Tigers 59-50.
