County Tourney begins Saturday
The 2016 Lawrence County Basketball Tournament gets underway Saturday at Walnut Ridge High School's Sharum Gymnasium.
Boys and girls teams from Hillcrest, Hoxie, Sloan-Hendrix and Walnut Ridge will compete for titles in fifth, sixth and seventh-grade, as well as junior high and senior high divisions.
Lady Mustangs beat Piggott
Hoxie's Lady Mustangs defeated Piggott 58-46 in 3A-3 Conference action Monday night at Hoxie.
Sydney Gillham had 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Kaitlin Henson scored 16 points for the Lady Mustangs.
Hoxie's junior girls defeated Piggott 30-15.
The senior Lady Mustangs defeated Corning 70-46 on Jan. 18 at Hoxie.
Hoxie put the Lady Bobcats away early, jumping out to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Mustangs continued to pull away, leading 40-19 at halftime and 58-32 heading into the final period.
WR splits with Salem
The Walnut Ridge senior boys remained undefeated in 2A-2 conference play with a 69-38 rout of the Salem Greyhounds Monday night at Sharum Gymnasium.
Spencer Wilson led Walnut Ridge with 15 points. Luke Wall scored 13 points, and Kyle Nunley added 12.
The Bobcats improved to 8-0 in the conference and 15-2 overall.
Greyhounds beat Tuckerman
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds defeated Tuckerman 65-61 in senior boys basketball action Monday night at Imboden.
The Greyhounds raced to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter, and led 30-18 at halftime. Tuckerman mounted a comeback in the second half, outscoring the Greyhounds 26-16 in the third period to close to within 46-44. Sloan-Hendrix held off the Bulldogs in the final period to take the win.
