Hoxie mayor speaks
about state of city

Hoxie Mayor Lanny Tinker read his state of the city report at the Jan. 12 city council meeting. The report included an update on the city's financial situation after 2015, as well as discussed some developments the city is getting in 2016.

While increased costs and the loss of the inmate work release program, which subsidized city labor, led to increases on water and sanitation rates, Tinker said the city is doing everything it can to keep costs down.

"All in city government take our responsibility very seriously, we continue to pledge our collective best efforts to provide services as reasonable priced as possible," Tinker said.

Citizens can pick up a copy of the state of the city report at city hall.

Also at the meeting, aldermen approved the 2016 budget. The general and police budgets were both down this year, while fire, sanitation, street, water and sewer budgets were higher this year. Fire, water and sewer received the largest increases due to increases in water rates and the addition of a full-time fire chief.

In other business:

the council authorized the payment of $48,953.21 to Arkansas Public Employees Retirement System to settle debt from unfunded liabilities for retirement plans for local district judges and county clerks. Tinker said if the city had continued to pay the debt in installments, it would be paying $40,328 in interest over the next 19 years.

aldermen did not make any adjustments to their salaries this year as had been done in previous years. Tinker also did not adjust his salary.

Tinker announced that recent changes to city committees included the additions of Teresa Lovelady to the planning and zoning committee and Greg Coats to the reuse job stimulus committee.

the third and final reading of an ordinance to rezone property in the Raney's Third Addition from R-1 to R-2 was approved. The property will be used to house a set of duplexes.
