S-H defeats Salem
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds started strong en route to a 76-51 victory over Salem's Greyhounds in 2A-2 boys basketball action Friday night at Salem.
Sloan-Hendrix raced out to a 23-12 lead in the first quarter, and increased the lead steadily throughout the contest. The Greyhounds led 38-26 at halftime and 55-40 after three quarters before closing the game with a 21-11 run in the fourth quarter.
Colby Johnson led Sloan-Hendrix with 23 points and four assists, while Matt Wilkins contributed 14 points. Hunter Stallings scored 11 points, and Shayne Dill finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Sloan-Hendrix improved to 6-1 in conference play and 15-6 overall.
Sloan-Hendrix hosted the Izard County Consolidated Cougars on Jan. 5.
ICC won the senior girls game 54-43.
Brittany Gosha had 18 points, and Alyssa Nichols added 12 for Sloan-Henrix.
The Lady Greyhounds fell to 16-5 with the loss.
In senior boys action, Sloan-Hendrix overcame a 24-point deficit and rallied to send the game into overtime tied 74-74. ICC outscored the Greyhounds 5-2 in the overtime period to take a 79-76 win. ICC's final 28 points came at the foul line. The Cougars did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter or in overtime.
Tyler Murphy led Sloan-Hendrix with 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Ben Meigs had 18 points. Johnson had 15 points, and Stallings added 10 points.
ICC won the junior boys game 38-27.
ICC led 9-2 at the end of the first quarter, 16-12 at halftime and 30-24 after three quarters.
Jacob Smith had nine points and 11 rebounds for the junior Hounds.
The Sloan-Hendrix junior high boys got a measure of revenge against ICC, defeating the Cougars 61-43 in the finals of the Hillcrest Junior Tournament at Lynn.
The junior Greyhounds jumped on the Cougars early, leading 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, 33-16 at halftime and 46-27 after three periods.
Jordan Dail led Sloan-Hendrix with 21 points, five assists, four steals and six deflections. Mike Gornowicz had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Logan Dail scored 10 points, and Braden Brand finished with eight points and five assists.
The junior Greyhounds improved to 19-2 on the season.
Sloan-Hendrix defeated Walnut Ridge 42-29 in the semifinals on Thursday.
Smith had 12 points and 13 rebounds. Jordan Dail had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Brand had eight points (including six free throws in the fourth quarter) and nine rebounds, and Gornowicz grabbed 11 rebounds.
The junior Hounds defeated Crowley's Ridge Academy 41-6 on Jan. 4.
Jordan Dail led the way with 24 points. Brand finished with six points, five assists and four steals, and Smith had five points and four rebounds.
In girls play, the junior Lady Greyhounds advanced to the semifinals, where they fell to Maynard 48-13 on Thursday.
