Bumpers passing
ties Charleston to
Hoxie integration

It is gratifying that the city of Hoxie and Hoxie School is being honored later this month with the Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission's prestigious Humanitarian Award. (See story on front page.)

The commission is recognizing Hoxie's contributions to the American Civil Rights movement through the 1955 integration of Hoxie School.

Pictures of the Past

Heavy rains in March 1975 caused $400,000 worth of damage and forced the evacuation of 20 homes. This aerial shot, taken by Bob Rainwater, shows the old Walmart, Harps and the First National Bank branch surrounded by water. Drainage district improvements since then have alleviated flooding issues along Village Creek in Walnut Ridge. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
