Hoxie fire claims life
According to officials, a fire early Sunday morning in Hoxie resulted in one fatality.
Hoxie Fire Chief Chris Ditto said when firefighters arrived at the scene they were told there was a subject in the house.
Ditto said a body was recovered and has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for positive identification and to determine cause of death.
While officials could not confirm the identity of the victim, pending the autopsy, a Go Fund Me site has been established by the family of Jerry Grissom, 51, of Hoxie, who is believed to have been in the home when it burned.
Lawrence County Dispatch received a call at approximately 1:45 a.m. stating that a house was on fire in the 800 block of Southwest Lawrence.
The house was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Hoxie and Walnut Ridge both responded to the scene.
Ditto said the fire was under control within an hour, however, firefighters remained on the scene until approximately 9:30 a.m.
Also assisting at the scene were Medic One Ambulance Service, the Hoxie and Walnut Ridge police departments and the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Arkansas State Police investigators are assisting with the investigation. Investigators with the ASP, HFD and HPD were on the scene Tuesday to gather evidence.
