County Assessor Farrah Matthews has announced that her last day in that office will be Jan. 14.

Becky Holder, who is the only candidate for assessor in November's General Election, will take office in January of 2017. The Lawrence County Quorum Court appointed Vickie Slusser to fill the position in the interim, as recommended by Matthews.

Currently in her eighth term as assessor, Matthews chose not to seek re-election. She recently announced that she would be resigning from the position to accept a job with Total Assessment Solution Corporation.

TASC is a reappraisal company that provides appraisal service to counties that do not chose to do their own appraising. She will be working with northern counties, including Stone County.

Matthews said it was not an easy decision.

"I love working with the people in Lawrence County," she said. "I appreciate them allowing me to serve all these years."

Matthews has worked for the county since 1996, starting as a data entry clerk and then an appraiser. She was elected as assessor in 2000 and took office for her first term in 2001.

She said she will miss seeing the people she has worked with on a daily basis.

"They are not just my co-workers, they are my family," she said.

She and her husband, Greg Bailey, plan to remain in Lawrence County. Her daughter and son-in-law, Madison and Tim Young live in Manila with their daughter, Tatum. She also has a stepson, Tyler Bailey of Walnut Ridge.

Matthews is the daughter of Tom and Sarah Matthews of Lynnville, Tenn., formerly of Walnut Ridge.
