Hoxie increases 2016
water, sanitation rates

The Hoxie City Council approved rate increases for water and garbage collection during a meeting on Dec. 29. The increases were both considered necessary due to cost increases associated with the Regional Water Authority and Northeast Arkansas Solid Waste.

Water rates for residential and commercial customers are now $7 for the first thousand gallons, up from $5.90, as well as for each subsequent 1,000 gallons up to 35,000. Water used over 35,000 will cost $4.60 per thousand gallons. Industrial customers will be charged $7 per thousand gallons for all usage.

Assessor's office preparing for transition

Matthews announced recently that she would be resigning from the position, which Holder is the sole candidate for in the November General Election. Slusser was appointed to hold the position until Holder takes office in 2017.

County Assessor Farrah Matthews has announced that her last day in that office will be Jan. 14.

Becky Holder, who is the only candidate for assessor in November's General Election, will take office in January of 2017. The Lawrence County Quorum Court appointed Vickie Slusser to fill the position in the interim, as recommended by Matthews.

Currently in her eighth term as assessor, Matthews chose not to seek re-election. She recently announced that she would be resigning from the position to accept a job with Total Assessment Solution Corporation.

County ends 2015 in good shape

The Lawrence County Quorum Court held its first meeting of the year Monday with justices agreeing that the county had a good year financially.

Hoxie to be honored
at King Fest, Jan. 18

The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission's prestigious Humanitarian Award will recognize the city of Hoxie and Hoxie School for their contributions to the American Civil Rights movement through the 1955 integration of Hoxie School.

Hoxie School voluntarily integrated in 1955 and was the first challenged integration. School board members stood up to segregationists and paved the way for other integration efforts.

Hoxie fire claims life

According to officials, a fire early Sunday morning in Hoxie resulted in one fatality.

Hoxie Fire Chief Chris Ditto said when firefighters arrived at the scene they were told there was a subject in the house.
