Cats advance to NEA semifinals
The Walnut Ridge senior boys basketball team defeated Cave City 57-50 in the second round of the NEA Invitational Tournament Monday evening at Jonesboro. The Bobcats were scheduled to play top-seeded Valley View in the Division II boys semifinals Tuesday night at 9 p.m.
Against the Cavemen, Walnut Ridge trailed early, but went on runs of 9-2 and 8-0 to lead 22-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Bobcats led 31-21 at the intermission, and stretched the advantage to 43-26 early in the third period. Cave City fought back and cut the Cats' lead to 43-34 at the end of the quarter, and got to within 52-49 late in the fourth quarter. Walnut Ridge then went on a 5-1 run to end the game.
Hoxie hosting Mustang Classic
Hoxie's senior boys and girls basketball teams came away with wins in the Mustang Classic Monday night at Mustang Gym in Hoxie.
In senior boys play, Hoxie defeated McCrory 55-36. Paul Adamson led the Mustangs with 17 points. Brock Jones scored 12 points, and James Johnson finished with 10 points.
S-H teams fall in NEA second round
The Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds fell to the number-one seeded East Poinsett County Warriors 82-64 in the second round of the Division I boys bracket of the NEA Invitational Basketball Tournament on Saturday in Jonesboro.
Sloan-Hendrix found themselves in an early hole, trailing 22-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Greyhounds had a better showing in the second period and cut the EPC's lead to 38-29 at halftime. Sloan-Hendrix closed to within 58-51 after three quarters, but the Warriors' outscored the Hounds 24-13 in the final period to secure the win.
