A lesson at Christmas
I remember one December, with Christmas Day nearing, when my dad took me with him to visit a man in Walnut Ridge and deliver a small gift. I was probably eight or nine years old, and my dad explained that the man was very poor, crippled and lived alone.
Pictures of the Past
The Hoxie Volunteer Fire Department was chartered in July 1954 with 16 members under Chief Merle Woods. Zack Lawhon (kneeling in center) is the fire chief in this December 1982 photograph. Leonard Ringle Jr. (sixth from left on the second row) was the only charter member still enlisted. A long-standing and much-anticipated Christmas tradition involved Santa Claus riding the fire truck through Hoxie and passing out candy to children. This photo is one of 213 that are featured in the book, “Images of America Walnut Ridge and Hoxie,” which was compiled by Jon Walter and James Whitlow and will be available in January.
