S-H teams advance

The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys and girls basketball teams each won their opening-round game in the NEA Invitational Tournament. The Sloan-Hendrix boys edged past Marmaduke 56-54 on Saturday, while the Lady Greyhounds defeated Augusta 48-18 on Monday.

In the boys game, Marmaduke jumped out to a 16-6 first-quarter lead and led 33-23 at halftime. Sloan-Hendrix stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring Marmaduke 21-10 to take a 44-43 lead into the final period. Sloan-Hendrix was able to hold off the other Greyhounds in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

Matt Wilkins led Sloan-Hendrix with 22 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Colby Johnson scored 12 points, and Tyler Murphy finished with seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.

The Sloan-Hendrix boys improved to 14-4 with the win. The Greyhounds will play East Poinsett County on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors are the number-one seed in the Division I boys bracket and received a first-round bye.

The Lady Greyhounds had a much easier time reaching the second round, routing the Augusta Lady Red Devils 48-18. Sloan-Hendrix dominated the contest from the outset, building a 28-5 lead after the first two quarters and 42-14 after three periods.

Maegan Brown had 16 points and seven rebounds, while Alyssa Nichols had a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Greyhounds will play the winner of today's game between Marmaduke and Cross County in the second-round on Monday at 1:30 p.m.


The Greyhounds defeated the Midland Mustangs 82-56 in a senior boys 2A-2 Conference matchup on Friday at Imboden.

Sloan-Hendrix led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, and stretched the lead to 36-24 at the intermission. Midland fought back in the third quarter to cut the Greyhounds' lead to 55-48 after three periods. Sloan-Hendrix outscored the Mustangs 27-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.

Johnson led the Greyhounds with 31 points and three steals. Murphy added 12 points and six assists, and Stallings finished with 12 points. Pocahontas

The Greyhounds hosted the Class 4A Pocahontas Redskins on Thursday night at Imboden.

Pocahontas defeated Sloan-Hendrix 51-39 in senior girls action.

The Lady Redskins led 13-8 after one quarter, 17-15 at halftime and 26-22 at the end of the third period.

Brown led Sloan-Hendrix with 12 points.

In the junior boys game, Sloan-Hendrix led 15-13 after the first quarter, 23-20 at halftime and 36-28 at the end of the third quarter en route to a 46-35 win over the visiting Redskins.

Jacob Smith led the junior Hounds with 14 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Mike Gornowicz had 13 points, eight rebounds and five blocks, and Jordan Dail added 10 points.

The junior Greyhounds improved to 16-1 on the season.


The junior boys team defeated Viola 48-29 on Dec. 14 at Viola.

Sloan-Hendrix jumped out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter, and led 29-12 at halftime and 46-17 after three quarters.

Gornowicz finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Dail added 13 points, and Smith had 12 points.
