S-H teams advance

The Sloan-Hendrix senior boys and girls basketball teams each won their opening-round game in the NEA Invitational Tournament. The Sloan-Hendrix boys edged past Marmaduke 56-54 on Saturday, while the Lady Greyhounds defeated Augusta 48-18 on Monday.

In the boys game, Marmaduke jumped out to a 16-6 first-quarter lead and led 33-23 at halftime. Sloan-Hendrix stormed back in the third quarter, outscoring Marmaduke 21-10 to take a 44-43 lead into the final period. Sloan-Hendrix was able to hold off the other Greyhounds in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

Matt Wilkins led Sloan-Hendrix with 22 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Colby Johnson scored 12 points, and Tyler Murphy finished with seven points, seven rebounds and five assists.

WR teams competing in NEA

The Walnut Ridge senior boys basketball team defeated Trumann 68-54 in the first round of the NEA Invitational Tournament at the ASU Convocation Center on Saturday.

The Bobcats led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and 32-15 at halftime.

Lady Mustangs record wins

The Hoxie Lady Mustangs improved to 3-0 in 3A-3 Conference play with a 56-54 win over Piggott on Thursday night at Piggott.

Hoxie led 13-5 at the end of the first quarter, but the Lady Mohawks were able to close to within 25-22 at the intermission. Hoxie stretched the lead to 42-34 after three quarters and withstood a fourth-quarter rally by Piggott to claim the win.

S-H sweeps Hillcrest

Sloan-Hendrix hosted Hillcrest in high school basketball action on Dec. 15 at Imboden.

In the senior girls game, Sloan-Hendrix defeated the Lady Screamin'Eagles 58-27. The Lady Greyhounds led 27-16 at halftime and 44-18 at the end of the third quarter.

Powell to run cross-country at WBC

Sloan-Hendrix senior Jessie Powell signed with the Williams Baptist College's cross-country team during a ceremony Friday afternoon at the Bill McCurley Gymnasium in Imboden.

Powell, who is a member of the Lady Greyhound cross-country team, said she likes the fact that competing in cross-country takes hard work.
