brings surge
of community,
holiday spirit

There is no lack of community or Christmas spirit at this time of year. We just experienced probably the busiest weekend of the year, in terms of community events.

Activities, concerts, parades, tours and parties for all ages, tastes and budgets have been held during the past week. From all reports, the area Christmas parades were some of the best ever. Chilly, but not frigid, temperatures helped make them enjoyable.

Pictures of the Past

The streetcar tracks were still visible on Main Street in Walnut Ridge in this 1936 postcard, though they had been out of service for several years. The Post Office, near right, had just been built a year earlier. It is now the home of The Times Dispatch. T.J. White Furniture, near left, occupied the old Swan Theater after it partially burned in 1930. It later was restored as the Sharum Theater. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
