Lynn veteran
viewed historic
WWII moment

In recognition of Veterans Day, it is fitting to share a story of one of our remarkable veterans.

Marion Burton "Burt" Jones, 91, of Lynn, died just over three weeks ago. A World War II veteran, he spent 27 or 28 months serving aboard the USS North Carolina Battleship, known to be the most highly decorated American battleship of World War II. The battleship took part in every major naval offensive in the Pacific Theater of Operations

Pictures of the Past

IN HONOR OF VETERANS DAY - Company K, 3rd Battalion, 153rd Infantry was organized in Walnut Ridge in 1929, and in 1933 moved to Hoxie, where they trained until they were deployed to Alaska during World War II. This picture from 1941 shows some of the troops gathered around several mailbags full of cards, letters and packages during their first of three Christmas seasons away from Lawrence County. (Pictures of the Past is a cooperative effort of The Times Dispatch and the Lawrence County Historical Society. Readers are encouraged to submit historic photos.)
