Strong second half
lifts Cats over EPC

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats roared to life in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit and defeat the East Poinsett County Warriors 27-14 in the finale of the football regular season Friday night at Lepanto.

Walnut Ridge finished the regular season with a 6-4 overall record, and 5-2 in 2A-3 conference play. The Bobcats qualified for the 2A State Playoffs as the fourth-place team from 2A-3 and will travel to Des Arc for their first-round game on Friday.

EPC jumped on the Bobcats in the first half, scoring touchdowns in each of the first two quarters and led 14-0 at the intermission.

Walnut Ridge started its comeback when Colin Phillips scored on a two-yard run with 4:21 to play in the third quarter. The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, and the Bobcats still trailed 14-6 at the end of the period.

Will Weir ran for an eight-yard touchdown to make the score 14-12. Weir passed to Martin Crisler for the conversion, tying the game 14-14 with 8:23 remaining in the game.

Weir put Walnut Ridge on top 20-14 with a 17-yard scamper with 4:54 to play. The Bobcats put the game away on Luke Harper's two-yard run with 47 seconds left. Chaz Burgin kicked the PAT for the final point.

Weir completed six-of-13 passes, for 72 yards.

Phillips led Walnut Ridge in rushing, with 144 yards on 22 carries. Harper added 101 yards on 16 carries. Weir carried 14 times for 39 yards, and Chaise Moore had one carry for two yards.

Crisler had three receptions for 35 yards. Wesley Friend caught two passes for 24 yards, and Harper had a 13-yard reception.

Harper led the Cats' defense with 13 tackles. C.J. Barnes had seven tackles, and Friend had six tackles. Tyler Barnes had five tackles and an interception, and Drake Smith had four tackles and a sack.
