Powhatan named Park of the Year
Powhatan Historic State Park has been named the 2014-2015 Overall Park of the Year by the Arkansas State Parks. The park also received honors for Outstanding Special Event and Region 2 Park of the Year.
The State Parks Division presents awards annually for park excellence within Arkansas's state parks system. The awards were announced at the annual business meeting of the park superintendents held Sept. 22-24, and the park was honored with a luncheon at Powhatan on Nov. 3.
State Parks Director Greg Butts said, "Visitor comments, maintenance and operations, budget management, revenue production, interpretive program development, volunteer program activities, community public relations, resource management and many other factors are considered in selecting the award recipients.
"Superintendent Kristyn Watts and the staff at Powhatan Historic State Park bring credit to the state of Arkansas with their outstanding work and accomplishments. The awards recognize their efforts, the public's response to those efforts, and focuses on their exemplary work in all areas of park management over the past year."
Powhatan's main resource management focus is the preservation of its historic structures and artifacts. This year, research and training focused towards the historic preservation of the Log House and Commercial Building. Research was completed on the proper preservation techniques and restoration regarding masonry. Staff members wrote a detailed plan of preservation and restoration including drawings proposing the restoration of the front parapet.
The park's volunteer program continues to grow and provide valuable contributions and service to the park and visitors through interpretive programs, resource management and community outreach. Seventeen volunteers donated 233 hours.
