James Johnson scored on a 10-yard run on Hoxie's first offensive play of overtime, giving the Mustangs a 34-28 win over the Osceola Seminoles in a 3A-3 Conference shootout Friday night at Osceola.

A first-quarter touchdown gave the Seminoles a 7-0 lead, but Hoxie tied the game later in the period on a run by Johnson. Casey Middlecoff kicked the PAT to tie the game and the teams went to the second quarter deadlocked 7-7.

Osceola took a 14-7 lead in the second period, but Johnson would hit Austen Blocker with a pair of touchdown passes to give Hoxie a 21-14 lead at halftime. First, Johnson found Blocker from four-yards out, and Middlecoff's PAT would tie the game 14-14 with 1:26 to play. Hoxie got the ball back before the intermission, and Johnson connected with Blocker for a 12-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half. Middlecoff added the extra point to send the Mustangs into the locker room with a 21-14 lead.

The Seminoles came out strong in the second half and scored two touchdowns to move into a 28-21 lead. Johnson scored on a five-yard quarterback keeper with 3:49 to play in the game, bringing the Mustangs to within 28-27. Middlecoff's fourth PAT knotted the game at 28-28.

Osceola had the ball first in the overtime period, but the Mustang defense held the Seminoles scoreless on four downs. On Hoxie's first-down play from the 10-yard line, Johnson found daylight on the left side and outraced the Seminole defenders to the corner of the end zone to give the Mustangs the victory.

Johnson finished with 200 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 31 carries. Diamani Davis carried 16 times for 70 yards.

Johnson completed seven of 14 pass attempts, for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

Blocker led Hoxie in receiving, with four catches for 30 yards and two touchdowns.

The Mustangs improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Hoxie hosts the Corning Bobcats on Friday night at Crider Field. Game time is 7 p.m.
