Walnut Ridge falls to Earle
The Earle Bulldogs scored 18 unanswered points in the second quarter on their way to posting a 34-14 win over the Walnut Ridge Bobcats in 2A-3 senior football action Friday night at Earle.
The game was scoreless after one quarter, but the Bulldogs took a 6-0 lead on Gerry Bohannon's three-yard keeper early in the second period. Bohannon passed to Marcus Brown for a 28-yard touchdown to give Earle a 12-0 lead at the 8:50 mark in the quarter. Richard Merrit broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown run with four minutes to play in the half, and the Bulldogs carried an 18-0 lead into halftime.
Walnut Ridge came out strong in the third quarter and whittled away at the Bulldogs' lead. Quarterback Will Weir scored on a one-yard run with 8:18 to play in the quarter. Luke Harper ran for the two-point conversion to cut Earle's lead to 18-8.
Weir scored on another keeper later in the period to bring the Bobcats to within 18-14 with 3:14 left in the third quarter.
Earle's running game turned in a pair of big plays to help the Bulldogs pull away in the fourth quarter. Merrit scored on a 34-yard run with 8:08 to play in the game. The two-point conversion stretched Earle's lead to 26-14.
On the Bulldog's next possession, Cortez Banks raced 32 yards for another Bulldog touchdown and a 32-14 lead. Earvin Gray's two-point conversion provided the final points.
Harper turned in a big game for the Bobcats, rushing for 171 yards on 17 attempts. He also had two pass receptions.
Chaise Moore carried six times for 32 yards, and Drake Smith added 25 yards on 10 carries. Colin Phillips had five carries for four yards.
Tyler Barnes and Smith each had a reception.
Weir finished four-of-14 passing, for 12 yards.
The loss dropped Walnut Ridge to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in 2A-3 Conference play. The Bobcats will host Marked Tree for homecoming on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
