The Hoxie duo of James Johnson and Diamani Davis was more than the Melbourne Bearkatz could handle in the Mustangs' 34-0 victory Friday night at Crider Field.

Johnson, the Mustangs' senior signal caller, rushed 29 times for 162 yards and four touchdowns, while Davis, a sophomore running back, gained 155 yards and scored one touchdown on 24 carries.

Johnson ran for a three-yard score late in the second quarter, and Wesley Wright added the two-point conversion to give Hoxie a 21-0 halftime lead.

Hoxie put the game away in the second half, as Johnson ran for two more touchdowns. The first was an 18-yard run in the final minute of the third quarter, as Hoxie stretched the lead to 28-0, following Middlecoff's PAT.

Johnson closed the scoring with a five-yard run with 3:06 to play in the contest, setting the final score.

Johnson attempted four passes in the game, with his only completion going to Dylan Littlejohn for five yards. Colton Robins carried one time for three yards.

Dylan Cheatham recorded a team-high 11 tackles for Hoxie's defense. Seth Wagoner and Robins each had five tackles. Gunner Riggs and Austen Blocker had four tackles apiece, with Blocker also recording a sack. Chandler Stroud, Middlecoff, Caleb Littlejohn and Tyler Ward each registered three tackles. Stroud and Littlejohn each had a sack. Johnson had two tackles and an interception, and Wright finished with one tackle.

Hoxie improved to 4-1 with the win and 2-0 in 3A-3 Conference play. The Mustangs travel to Wilson on Friday for a showdown with the Rivercrest Colts. Game time is 7 p.m.
