The Walnut Ridge Bobcats spotted the Rector Cougars and early 6-0 lead before rolling off 42 unanswered points in a 42-6 victory in 2A-3 high school football action Friday night at Rector.

Walnut Ridge received the opening kickoff, but Rector's Garrett Buck intercepted a Bobcat pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage.

The Bobcats answered later in the period when quarterback Will Weir outraced the defense for a 31-yard touchdown. Michael Bounds' two-point conversion gave Walnut Ridge an 8-6 lead heading into the second period.

Walnut Ridge stretched its lead to 14-6 in the second quarter when Weir threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Harper. Later, Weir connected with Harper again, this time for a four-yard touchdown. Weir found Bounds for the conversion as Walnut Ridge took a 22-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Bobcats continued to roll in the second half. Weir scored on a one-yard keeper to give Walnut Ridge a 28-6 lead. Special teams got into the act when Drake Smith fielded a Cougar punt and raced 69 yards for another Bobcat score. Chaz Burgin added the PAT to give the Cats a 36-6 advantage at the end of the third period.

Walnut Ridge's final points came on Wesley Friend's 14-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Cats racked up 371 yards of total offense, while holding Rector to 81 yards.

Weir completed 10-of-18 pass attempts, for 114 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 33 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

Colin Phillips led Walnut Ridge in rushing with 93 yards on 10 carries. Harper added 45 yards on eight carries, and Chaise Moore had 37 yards on two attempts. Friend added 19 yards on three attempts, and Bounds had one carry for 18 yards. Kyle Nunley and Smith each rushed for six yards.
