Hoxie routs Cave City, 42-21
Hoxie's Diamani Davis scored five touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to a 42-21 win over the Cave City Cavemen in high school football action Friday night at Cave City.
The Mustangs took an early lead on James Johnson's four-yard run early in the first quarter. Casey Middlecoff booted the extra point.
Cave City tied the score on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Joseph Patterson to Haston Bullard later in the opening period.
Davis scored his first touchdown of the evening on a 22-yard run with 4:57 remaining in the quarter. Middlecoff's extra point put Hoxie ahead 14-7.
The Mustangs broke the game open in the second quarter, as Davis ran for three scores in the period.
Davis scored from one yard out midway through the period to give Hoxie a 20-7 advantage. Davis added a seven-yard score at the 4:10 mark, followed by Johnson's two-point conversion, as the Mustangs stretched the lead to 28-7. Davis closed the period with a two-yard run with 36 seconds left before halftime. Middlecoff's kick gave Hoxie a commanding 35-7 lead at the intermission.
Davis scored his fifth touchdown on a six-yard run in the third period. Middlecoff added Hoxie's final point, as the Mustangs stretched the lead to 42-7.
Cave City added two touchdowns from Arnold Cunningham in the game's closing minutes to set the final score.
Johnson completed four-of-10 pass attempts, for 66 yards. He was also the Mustangs' leading ground gainer, with 192 yards on 16 carries.
Davis finished with 112 yards rushing on 17 carries. Sam Hatfield added 10 yards on two carries, and Gunner Riggs had nine yards on two carries. Dylan Cheatham rushed once for seven yards. Austen Blocker had one carry for five yards, and Colton Robins had one carry for three yards.
Blocker caught two passes for 57 yards. Hatfield had one reception for seven yards, and Dylan Littlejohn caught one pass for two yards.
Cheatham led Hoxie's defensive effort with 10 tackles. Riggs added six tackles, and Robins recorded five stops. Caleb Littlejohn and Dylan Littlejohn each registered four tackles, and Tyler Ward had three tackles. Chandler Stroud, Seth Wagoner, Brock Jones, Wesley Wright and Davis were each credited with two tackles. Gunner Moore, Middlecoff and Hatfield each made one tackle.
Hoxie improved to 2-1 with the win. The Mustangs open 3A-3 Conference play when they host the Cedar Ridge Timberwolves Friday night at Crider Field for homecoming. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
