Mustangs rout Westside, 42-13
Hoxie quarterback James Johnson ran for two touchdowns and passed for two scores to lead the Mustangs to a 42-13 rout over the Westside Warriors in senior high football action Friday night at Crider Field.
Hoxie opened the scoring on Johnson's four-yard run late in the first quarter. Casey Middlecoff's extra point gave the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 13-0 when Johnson connected with Wesley Wright on a 64-yard touchdown pass with 9:35 to play in the second quarter.
Westside closed the gap to 13-7 on a five-yard run by Quoshon Gillespie with 2:11 to play in the first half.
Hoxie answered quickly when Johnson passed 59 yards to Austen Blocker 45 seconds before the intermission. Johnson ran for the conversion to give the Mustangs a 21-7 lead at the break.
Hoxie pulled away in the second half when Diamani Davis scored on a one-yard run the third quarter. Johnson added a two-yard touchdown run later in the third period. Middlecoff added the PAT after each score, as the Mustangs' lead grew to 35-7.
The Mustangs' final touchdown came on a seven-yard run by Davis with 9:04 left in the contest. Middlecoff booted Hoxie's final point for a 42-7 lead.
A late touchdown by Westside's Austin Murphy set the final score.
Johnson finished with 103 yards rushing on 16 carries. He was four-of-five passing, for 143 yards.
Davis led Hoxie in rushing, with 120 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Wright finished with three receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Hoxie improved to 1-1 on the season. The Mustangs travel to Cave City on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
