Archives receives Sellers collection
The Northeast Arkansas Regional Archives in Powhatan recently received a donation from the Sellers family of Barney Sellers' personal archive of photographs he shot in Arkansas.
The donation, which is made up of eight paper boxes full of negatives, also included frames to use for displaying the photos. A collection of 24 photos, selected by NEARA employees Lisa Perry and Meredith McFadden, now hang in the NEARA facility at 11 Seventh Street in Powhatan.
"Trying to choose was difficult," Perry said after going through thousands upon thousands of photos to pick the fraction of a percent of the collection to display.
Amongst the photos can be seen waterwheels, White River, Powhatan Historic State Park, old service stations and grocery stores, Calico Rock, a 1950s street scene in Walnut Ridge, the Portia School and, of course, a few of Barney's barns.
"We tried to pick ones that were representative of the area," Meredith said. She also added that the photos really show how people lived and have a wonderful blending of the old and new over the generations.
Perry said they hope to also establish a traveling exhibit using a collection of photos that were displayed in Butler Center in Little Rock prior to Barney Sellers' passing.
