WR Airport Commission
accepts concrete work bid
A special Walnut Ridge Airport Commission meeting was called Tuesday, Aug. 4, to approve a bid for concrete work to be done at the airport. Commissioners accepted the low bid of $593,000 from Clark General Contractors, Inc. of Walnut Ridge.
With the cost of concrete up, Airport Commission Chair Don Cavenaugh said they might not be able to do as much work as hoped, however he was recently informed about some Non-Primary Entitlements (NPE) money in the amount of $78,000 that might be available.
NPE money is left over from other airport projects that came in under budget. Commissioners voted to allow Cavanaugh to apply for the NPE money to allow additional concrete work to be done.
If no additional money is available, the project will move forward with less concrete work. In either scenario, the project will be entirely funded through federal and state money.
The commission also voted to continue to budget for feeding military aircrews upon request, which has been a service offered at the airport for years. Commissioners agreed it is a good service to have and shows a level of hospitality the airport has become known for.
Cavenaugh said the expense of the meals is relatively low, and it is important to remember the airport is a business. "We try to bring business in for fuel sales, and we do that by offering good service."
