Children's Shelter event raises
$22,500, Cavenaugh honored
The Children's Shelter Summer Gala has become an annual event that offers a fun evening in support of a worthwhile cause. This year's event, held Thursday night at The Studio, was one of the best and most successful with approximately 183 tickets sold.
The event raised $22,500 for The Shelter, and offered great food, entertainment and auction items in an extraordinary setting. Mel Fender and her staff catered the dinner, the Vikki McGee Band provided music and Ronnie "Frog" Light served as auctioneer.
Judy Turnbull, board president, reported to attendees that the Shelter has served 780 children since it first opened on June 1, 2009. Expenses, including salaries, total approximately $22,000 monthly, she said, adding that events such as the gala help keep the shelter doors open.
Turnbull announced that Fran Cavenaugh is the Friends of the Shelter 2015 Volunteer of the Year and that Jackie Snapp has been named as a new member of the board.
Cavenaugh served as event chair, with a committee consisting of Milton Smith, Jackie Snapp, Judy Turnbull and Ken Ziegler. Volunteers assisting with the event included Frema Gipson, Ed Harris, Morgan Horne, Dina Rose, Madisyn Salard and Gary Salard Jr.
"The Children's Shelter is a private, nonprofit organization that provides 24-hour emergency, temporary residential care to children who are victims of family violence, neglect, and physical or sexual abuse. It's designed to meet the needs of these children by providing them with an immediate, safe environment until a suitable relative or foster care becomes available," according to the Shelter's mission statement.
An upcoming major fundraiser for The Children's Shelter is "A Night of Stars Under the Stars" featuring The Broadway Tenors, which includes Jonesboro natives Matt Cavenaugh and Kyle Dean Massey.
That event will be held Monday, Sept. 14, at The Silos in Bono. For tickets, contact Amy Pickens at 870-882-2941 or Fran Cavenaugh at 870-761-3990 or order tickets online at www.night-of-stars.org.
