Robert Armory
to remain open

Senator Blake Johnson has confirmed with Gov. Asa Hutchison's office that the Robert Armory will remain open.

A meeting called by Major General Mark Berry and Colonel Greg Bacon on the morning of May 12 revealed the possibility of the armory being shut down and consolidated into the Newport center.

Many officials attended the meeting, including Johnson, Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp, County Judge Dale Freeman and Rep. James Ratliff.

"We owe a lot to the 22 people who were at the meeting and to those who made phone calls and sent letters," Snapp said. "It's a classic example of what we can do if we work together."

Both the Walnut Ridge and Rector based armories were facing consolidation. A release from the Arkansas National Guard Public Affairs Office confirmed that the Rector facility will close later in the year.

The units and soldiers assigned to Rector will drill at other National Guard locations, according to Bacon. However, nothing has been released about any additional units coming to Walnut Ridge.
