Cats make regional finals
The Walnut Ridge Bobcats advanced to the finals of the 2A North Region Baseball Tournament at Tuckerman. The Bobcats defeated Marked Tree and Pangburn to reach the title game. Tuckerman and Riverside were scheduled to meet in a semifinal game Tuesday afternoon, with the winner facing Walnut Ridge in the finals at 5 p.m.
The Bobcats defeated Marked Tree 8-2 in a first-round matchup on Friday.
Walnut Ridge built an early lead with two runs in the first inning, three in the second inning and three more in the fourth. The Indians scored their runs in the sixth inning, but couldn't overcome the Cats' lead.
Layne Ditto went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Drake Smelser had a double and three RBIs. Cash Lee was 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs. Will Weir was 2-for-4 and scored a run. Lane Kennedy had a hit and drove in a run. Luke Wall had an RBI and scored a run. Drake Smith and Michael Bounds each scored a run, and Colin Phillips had a hit.
Ditto pitched a complete game on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out nine batters.
A pair of big offensive innings proved key as the Bobcats defeated the Pangburn Tigers 9-2 in a semifinal contest on Saturday.
Walnut Ridge jumped on the Tigers early, with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ditto's two-RBI double was the big hit in the inning for the Bobcats.
Pangburn scored a run in the second inning and another in the third to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Bobcats plated four runs in the bottom of the third to move out to an 8-2 lead. Smith had an RBI double, and Lee drove in a run in the inning, and the Bobcats benefited from three wild pitches.
Walnut Ridge added an insurance run in the fifth inning to close out the scoring.
Lee was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs. Ditto finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and scored a run. Weir went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run. Smelser went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Kennedy had a hit and scored a run. Bounds had a hit and scored a run. Wall drove in a run, and Phillips had a hit.
Weir earned the win on the mound. He allowed one earned run on six hits and recorded five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
