Native American skeleton
found in Lawrence County

While in a remote area on the Spring River on April 22, a local fisherman discovered what appeared to be the skeletal remains of a human.

He reported the findings to Chief Tim McComas of the Ravenden Police Department. Investigators with the Arkansas State Police, Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and Arkansas State Parks Office surveyed the scene and determined that the remains were Native American.

At that time, Dr. Juliet Morrow with the Arkansas Archeological Survey was contacted and advised investigators how to handle the scene. Those remains, which were in jeopardy of being washed away by the river, were collected and turned over to Morrow

Morrow plans to return to the site in the near future for further exploration. Investigators are not disclosing the whereabouts of the find to insure the site will remain undisturbed.
