NEARIFA elects officers
The trip to Batesville for a tour of the PECO processing plant and meeting with community leaders was the chief topic during Thursday's Northeast Arkansas Regional Intermodal Facilities Authority meeting.
Intermodal Director Wayne Gearhart updated those present concerning the outing and welcomed Black River Technical College President Eric Turner, who stated the college would do its part in preparing the community for the expected population increase due to the PECO plant.
"BRTC can, and should be, a part of preparing our community for anticipated demographic changes accompanying the poultry industry's arrival into this region," Dr. Turner said.
Turner shared with the group on many "behind the scenes" efforts since last summer, one of which, related to cross-cultural communication. According to Dr. Turner, as a result of this work, Dr. Jan Ziegler was instrumental in writing an Arkansas Humanities Council grant to fund the initiative.
In other business, the board voted unanimously to accept the nominations of the following slate of officers; Scott Trammel, chair, representing Randolph County; Nick Mannatt, vice-chair, representing the City of Corning; Milton Smith, treasurer, representing the City of Walnut Ridge; Alex Bigger, secretary, representing the City of Pocahontas and Lloyd Clark, at large member, representing Lawrence County.
