Bobcats have winning week
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat baseball team opened 2A-2 Conference play with a 5-2 victory over the Pangburn Tigers on Friday at Walnut Ridge.
A four-run first inning provided the Bobcats with all the scoring they would need. Layne Ditto's two-run single was the key hit in the inning.
Luke Wall earned the win on the mound. He allowed two runs on four hits and recorded eight strikeouts in six innings of work. Will Weir pitched the seventh inning and had one strikeout while not allowing a hit.
The Bobcats improved to 1-0 in the conference and 3-1 overall.
Walnut Ridge scored three runs in the final two innings to edge the visiting Newport Greyhounds 3-2 on March 17.
Newport led 2-0 before the Bobcats tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cash Lee scored the winning run on Drake Smelser's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bobcats the win.
Weir and Smelser each had two hits for Walnut Ridge.
Ditto was the winning pitcher. He allowed two runs on five hits and registered 10 strikeouts.
The Bobcats picked up their first win of the season when they defeated Cave City 5-2 on March 16 at Walnut Ridge.
Smelser had two hits and two RBIs, and Lane Kennedy added two hits.
Weir started on the mound and pitched six innings to earn the win. Ditto pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief to earn the save.
