WR to revisit splash
pad in future
The Walnut Ridge City Council voted to turn back its Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism grant due to failure to raise the city's portion of the matching grant.
About $82,000 was still needed to match the city's half of the grant, according to Alderman Anthony Pinkston. "We don't have that in reserve," he said at the meeting. He said it is the budget committee's recommendation to turn back the grant.
Mayor Charles Snapp said he has already discussed the possibility of applying for a grant in the summer of 2016 to work on the park and possibly revisit the splash pad then.
The Kiwanis Club in cooperation with Cavenaugh Auto Group raised $45,000 for the matching portion of the grant. The money will be kept by the club to be used in the future.
"We'd like to see it used toward the park. There's a lot of needs there," Don Cavenaugh said.
Alderman Rob Combs said this project started with the best of intentions and it is unfortunate that they weren't able to raise the money. "I feel so sad that we can't do it," he said.
In other business:
- Snapp was authorized by the council to seek the annexation of 20 acres located on the Walnut Ridge Regional Airport site. The property is owned by Walnut Ridge but it is within the city limits of College City. Snapp will request the release of the property from College City and approval from the Airport Commission to allow him to make the necessary adjustments to turn the property into a small industrial park.
- Aldermen voted to approve the first reading of an amended city tree ordinance to better reflect what the city considers a tree and to clarify that people receiving compensation must handle their own trimmings and clippings.
- Snapp formed a dog law committee to review the city's ordinances on dogs and recommend changes to be made. The mayor said that he is not for breed specific legislation. Committee members are Wendell Jones, who will serve as chair, Michael Sellers, Justin Petro and Jeff Taylor.
- a mowing committee was formed with Allen Smith serving as chair. Rick Ditto, Pinkston and Taylor make up the rest of the committee.
