Snow falls late Monday morning at the Iron Mountain Depot and Cavenaugh Park in Walnut Ridge. A layer of snow covered a wintry mix, primarily of sleet, that fell overnight Sunday and early Monday. Two to three inches of the frozen precipitation and frigid temperatures closed schools, Williams Baptist College and several businesses.

About two to three inches of winter precipitation fell on Lawrence County at the beginning of the week. The layer of ice and snow on the ground is expected to linger throughout the week as temperatures remain below freezing.

The Walnut Ridge City Council voted to turn back its Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism grant due to failure to raise the city's portion of the matching grant.

New sheriff brings change
As might be expected with a new sheriff, change has been prevalent in the Lawrence County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Jeff Yates took office Jan. 1, and his new chief deputy is Tony Waldrupe.
Mayor Tinker discusses
Hoxie Mayor Lanny Tinker gave his state of the city address during the Feb. 10 city council meeting. "I believe that your city government is working to the very best of our ability to reasonably deal with city problems," he said.

Jail committee to meet
The Lawrence County jail committee will meet with three architecture firms to hear proposals on a new county jail. Meeting times are Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. All meetings will be held in the Lawrence County Courthouse conference room.
