Walnut Ridge's senior high boys basketball team defeated Pangburn 77-56 on Jan. 27 to improve to 8-2 in the 2A-2 Conference standings. With the win, the Bobcats assured themselves of finishing no worse than second in the conference, and clinched a berth in the regional tournament.
The Bobcats pounced on the Tigers early, taking a 24-7 lead in the first quarter. Walnut Ridge maintained a comfortable margin throughout the contest, leading 40-25 at halftime and 57-38 at the end of the third quarter.
Kenzie Flippo led the Cats with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Spencer Wilson also recorded a double-double, with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Luke Wall scored 10 points, and Martin Crisler finished with nine points and six assists.
Walnut Ridge won the junior boys game 52-37.
The Lady Bobcats withstood a furious second-half rally by Pangburn and held on for a 62-59 win.
Walnut Ridge trailed 12-8 at the end of the first quarter, but seemed to take command of the game in the second period, outscoring the Lady Tigers 29-8 to take a 37-20 lead at halftime.
Pangburn wasted no time in beginning their comeback, outscoring the Lady Bobcats 21-10 in the third quarter to close the gap to 47-41. The Lady Tigers continued to cut into Walnut Ridge's lead in the fourth quarter, but clutch free-throw shooting by McQuay helped preserve the victory. Allyson McQuay was a perfect 10-of-10 from the charity stripe in the final period, and hit 19-of-21 free-throws for the game.
McQuay finished with 32 points, followed by Whitney Rider with 11 points.
A balanced offense helped Walnut Ridge's Lady Bobcats eke out a 67-64 come-from-behind victory over White County Central Thursday night at Sharum Gymnasium.
Walnut Ridge led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed the Lady Bears 33-27 at halftime. The Lady Cats continued to trail after three quarters, 51-46, but rallied in the final period to outscore WCC 21-13 to pull out the victory.
McQuay led the Lady Bobcats with 19 points, and Rider finished with 16. Sunnie Cunningham added 12 points, and Courtney Cox contributed 11.
The victory improved the Lady Bobcats' record to 4-6 in 2A-2 Conference play and 7-11 overall.
The Walnut Ridge junior high girls defeated WCC 39-26.
