CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY ~ Frank Petero (from left), who served with the U.S. Army form 1955 to 1960, Roy Meeker, who served from 1961 to 1963, and Don Jones, who served in the Navy from 1957 to 1979, have breakfast together at the Wings of Honor pancake breakfast Tuesday morning. Local schools also held programs on Veterans Day to honor those who have served the United States.

Sheriff to resign Friday,
interim appointed

Lawrence County Sheriff Jody Dotson has announced that he is resigning, effective Friday at noon. Dotson did not seek reelection in 2014 and incoming sheriff Jeff Yates will not be able to take office until January.

Robert's Service Center to close after 36 years

Robert's Service Center has served the communities of Portia, Black Rock and the surrounding areas for 36 years, and owners Robert and Fern Shelton have said it's time to close the last full-service station in Lawrence County.

Runoffs set for Nov. 25

Two runoffs have been slated in Lawrence County following the Nov. 4 General Election.

grants, shooting ranges

The Walnut Ridge Airport Commission discussed two grants they will apply for in the very near future and issues that a recent airport inspection brought to their attention.

Hwy. 63 to be widened

The Arkansas State Highway Commission has approved a bid to widen 1.5 miles of Highway 63 to five lanes extending west from Free Street in Portia.
