Hoxie defeats Piggott, 56-14
Cole Sears' four touchdown passes ignited a 35-point first quarter in Hoxie's 56-14 rout of the Piggott Mohawks Friday night at Piggott.
The Mustangs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Gunner Cook took a Sears pass and raced 74 yards to the end zone 15 seconds into the contest. Casey Middlecoff kicked the first of his eight extra points to give Hoxie a 7-0 lead.
Sears connected with Austen Blocker for a 40-yard touchdown on the Mustangs' next possession to make the score 14-0.
Piggott tried to make a game of it when Nick McKinnie scored on a 60-yard run later in the period. The two-point conversion brought the Mohawks to within 14-8.
Hoxie answered Piggott's touchdown with four consecutive scores to put the game out of reach. Cook's three-yard run, followed by Middlecoff's PAT, gave the Mustangs a 21-8 advantage.
Hunter Wilson hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass to stretch the lead to 28-8. Sears passed 23 yards to James Johnson to make the score 35-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Cook scored on a 25-yard run to increase the lead to 42-8 with 9:52 remaining in the first half.
Piggott's McKinnie scored on a 68-yard run to make the score 42-14.
Hoxie closed out the scoring in the first half on Cook's two-yard run later in the quarter. Middlecoff's extra point sent the Mustangs into the locker room with a commanding 49-14 lead.
Gunner Riggs scored Hoxie's final touchdown of the evening on a 22-yard run in the third quarter. Middlecoff's PAT set the final score.
Sears finished with nine completions on 13 attempts, for 337 yards and four touchdowns.
Cook led Hoxie on the ground, with 136 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Riggs added 24 yards and a touchdown on three carries, and Samuel Hatfield had three carries for 18 yards.
Johnson had three catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. Cook added 91 yards and a touchdown on two receptions. Wilson finished with two catches for 41 yards and a touchdown. Chase Spradlin caught one pass for 45 yards, and Blocker had one catch for a 40-yard touchdown.
Austin Williams led the Mustangs' defense with 11 tackles, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. Dylan Cheatham had eight tackles. Seth Wagoner and Spradlin each recorded five tackles. Riggs finished with three tackles and a fumble recovery. Middlecoff had two tackles and a quarterback sack.
Hoxie improved to 5-1 in 3A-3 Conference play and 8-1 overall. The Mustangs will close out the regular season when they host Manila for Senior Night on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
