Mustangs finish strong against Corning

The Hoxie Mustangs ran off 48 unanswered points to overcome a second-quarter deficit and cruise to a 62-20 victory over the Corning Bobcats in 3A-3 Conference action Friday night at Corning.

Trailing 6-0, Hoxie got on the scoreboard when Cole Sears tossed the first of his four touchdown passes, a 25-yarder to James Johnson, to even the score. Casey Middlecoff's extra point gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead, which they held at the end of the first quarter.

Corning took a 12-7 lead on a touchdown early in the second period, but the Mustangs responded with their own scoring drive that was capped by Sears' three-yard pass to Chase Spradlin. Middlecoff's kick provided the Mustangs with a 14-12 advantage.

The lead changed hands again when Corning returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards. The two-point conversion gave the Bobcats' their final lead at 20-14.

Hoxie closed out the first half with 21 straight points to take a 35-20 lead at halftime.

Gunner Cook started the onslaught by taking a pass from Sears and racing 38 yards for a touchdown. Sears found Hunter Wilson with a 26-yard scoring pass later in the quarter. Hoxie ended the first half on Sears' two-yard keeper, followed by Middlecoff's fifth extra point.

The Mustangs continued to roll after the intermission. Cook scored on a 31-yard run. Middlecoff again provided the PAT for a 42-20 lead.

Hoxie's defense contributed to the scoring when Rylee Lewis picked off a Bobcat pass and returned it four yards for another Mustang touchdown, boosting the lead to 48-20 after three quarters.

The Mustangs added two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Cook scored on a 15-yard run, and Gunner Riggs ran for a 12-yard touchdown. Middlecoff booted a PAT after each touchdown.

Sears finished 11/17 passing, for 197 yards and four touchdowns.

Cook led the Mustangs' rushing attack with 164 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Sears added 13 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. Riggs had one carry for 12 yards and a touchdown.

Austen Blocker led Hoxie's receivers with three catches for 49 yards. Wilson had two receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Littlejohn had two catches for 23 yards. Cook had one catch for 38 yards and a touchdown. Johnson caught one pass for 25 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Cheatham had one catch for 13 yards, and Spradlin caught a three-yard pass for a touchdown.

Steven Arnold and Spradlin each recorded eight tackles to lead the Mustangs defense. Cheatham and Austin Williams each recorded seven tackles, while Cheatham also had an interception. Wilson had five tackles and an interception. Lewis finished with four tackles and an interception for a touchdown, and Seth Wagoner had three tackles and forced a fumble.

Hoxie improved to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in 3A-3 Conference play. The Mustangs travel to Piggott on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
