Hoxie to condemn properties
The Hoxie City Council voted to proceed with the condemnation process on six properties at its Oct. 14 meeting.
Code enforcement officers recommended the following locations for condemnation due to safety violations: 2103 Southeast Third Street, 2102 Southeast Second Street, 200 Northeast Third Street, 202 Northeast Carolina Street, 407 Southeast Fourth Street and 127 Northeast Fifth Street.
Code enforcement will be directed to inform the property owners, who will have 30 days to correct the deficiencies or comply with the current ordinance. If such actions are not taken within the time allotted, the city shall have the right to demolish the structure and file a lien against the property in circuit court.
The council also discussed changes in how building permits are issued. Mayor Lanny Tinker said citizens should be aware that building permits are no longer being issued the same day as requested. Contractors and individuals requesting permits should expect at least a two-week waiting period to allow proper review before approval. Those requesting a variance should expect a minimum of 30 days before approval or rejection.
Citizen Carroll Goodwin, city council candidate, expressed concerns about how the board of adjustments is handling variances, stating they have been too liberal with them. Tinker and board of adjustments member Redda Russell assured Goodwin that careful consideration is taken when allowing a variance.
