Sears leads Mustangs to
49-13 win over Rivercrest

Cole Sears ran for three touchdowns and passed for two more as the Hoxie Mustangs rang up 42 first-half points in a 49-13 rout of the Rivercrest Colts Friday night at Crider Field.

Sears put Hoxie on the board with a three-yard run with 5:27 remaining in the first quarter, capping an 85-yard drive. Casey Middlecoff's extra point gave Hoxie a 7-0 lead.

After a Rivercrest punt, the Mustangs marched again, with Sears finding James Johnson for a 10-yard score, boosting the lead to 13-0 with 56 seconds left in the quarter.

Hoxie increased its lead to 21-0 on Sears' two-yard run early in the second period. Gunner Cook ran for the two-point conversion.

Rivercrest's Cecil Langston ran for a 28-yard touchdown to bring the Colts to within 21-6 with 8:40 left in the half.

Hoxie put the contest out of reach with three scores before the intermission. Sears scored on a five-yard run at the 5:06 mark, followed by a 13-yard touchdown run by Cook. Sears hit Hunter Wilson with a 68-yard scoring strike with 1:10 to play in the half. Middlecoff's extra point gave the Mustangs a 42-6 halftime lead.

Cook scored on a seven-yard run and Middlecoff added the PAT to stretch Hoxie's lead to 49-6 in the third quarter.

Rivercrest scored the game's final points in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run by Langston and added the PAT to set the final score.

Hoxie finished with 442 total yards, including 308 on the ground, while allowing the Colts just 137 total yards and five first downs for the game.

Sears completed six of his seven passes, for 134 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

Cook led Hoxie's ground attack with 181 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. Gunner Riggs had two yards on two carries, and Samuel Hatfield added a yard on two carries.

Johnson finished with two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown, while Cook caught two passes for 26 yards. Wilson had a 68-yard touchdown reception, and Austen Blocker had one reception for six yards.

Dylan Cheatham led Hoxie's defense with 10 tackles. Wilson recorded seven tackles and a sack. Stephen Arnold had six tackles and forced a fumble, while Austin William had six tackles and a fumble recovery. Chase Spradlin recorded five tackles and recovered a fumble. Riggs made four tackles and recovered a fumble, and Hunter Wadkins had two tackles and a sack.

Hoxie improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in 3-3A Conference play. The Mustangs host Osceola for homecoming on Friday. The Seminoles are also 3-0 in the conference. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
