The Hoxie Mustangs exploded for 34 unanswered points in a 20-minute span to turn a tie game into a 47-13 rout of the Melbourne Bearkatz Friday night at Melbourne.
The Bearkatz jumped on top early when Conor Fogle broke loose for a 63-yard run on the game's second play.
Hoxie responded on their ensuing possession when Cole Sears scored the first of his four rushing touchdowns on a 19-yard run to knot the game 7-7.
The Mustangs took a 13-7 lead on Sears' four-yard run in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Melbourne's tied the game on Fogle's four-yard pass to Jared Humphrey with 8:14 to play in the period.
Sears put the Mustangs back on top with an 11-yard pass to Gunner Cook with 3:22 before halftime. Casey Middlcoff's extra point gave Hoxie a 20-13 lead.
After a defensive stop, the Mustangs stretched the lead to 27-13 on Cook's three-yard run with just 15 seconds left in the half.
Hoxie continued to pull away in the third quarter. Sears scored on touchdown runs of five and two yards, as the Mustangs' lead ballooned to 40-13.
Cook outran the Katz' defense for a 55-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter. Middlecoff's PAT proved the game's final point.
Sears was 12/15 passing, for 174 yards and a touchdown.
Cook led Hoxie's ground game with 218 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Sears finished with 101 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries. Gunner Riggs gained 41 yards on eight attempts, and James Johnson had 15 yards on two carries.
Austen Blocker led the Mustangs' receiving corps with five catches for 80 yards. Dylan Littlejohn had three receptions for 28 yards. Johnson had two catches for 41 yards. Cook caught two passes for 25 yards and a touchdown.
Riggs led Hoxie's defense with 11 tackles. Steven Arnold recorded eight tackles and recovered a fumble. Dylan Cheatham had eight tackles and forced a fumble. Hunter Wilson had five tackles and a quarterback sack. Seth Wagoner made three tackles and forced a fumble. Chase Spradlin had three tackles and recovered a fumble.
Hoxie ran its unbeaten record to 5-0 and 2-0 in conference play. This Friday is Blackout Night as the Mustangs host Rivercrest for a 7 p.m. contest.
