WR blanks Rector
for homecoming win

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats earned their first victory of the season with a 38-0 shutout of Rector in front of a homecoming crowd at Sexton Field Friday night.

The Bobcats made short work of their visitors with 22 first-quarter points. Luke Harper opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown with 6:31 to play. Will Weir passed to Tyler Barnes for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

With 2:34 remaining in the quarter, Weir tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Cash Lee. Weir then found Michael Bounds for the conversion to stretch Walnut Ridge's lead to 16-0.

Weir passed 21 yards to Harper for the Bobcats' third touchdown. The conversion attempt failed, leaving the score 22-0 with 52 seconds left in the period.

Walnut Ridge added to its lead in the second quarter when Weir scored on a two-yard run. Weir also ran for the conversion, and the Bobcats took a 30-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Harper found the end zone for the third time on a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter. Weir passed to Harper for the conversion to set the final score.

Weir finished with five completions on six attempts, for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

Harper finished with 92 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Weir rushed for 37 yards on 11 attempts. Martin Crisler added 19 yards on four carries. Lee carried five times for seven yards, and Tyler Andrews had three yards on two carries.

Lee had two receptions for 39 yards and a touchdown, and Harper caught two passes for 33 yards and a touchdown. Chase Baker had one reception for 47 yards.

The Bobcats' defense held Rector to just 21 yards of total offense for the game.

Walnut Ridge improved to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in 3-2A Conference play. The Bobcats take to the road to face Cross County on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
