Hailie Jade Palmer

Justin Palmer and Paradise Waddell, both of Pocahontas, have announced the birth of a daughter, born on July 21, 2014, at Arkansas Methodist Hospital in Paragould.

The baby weighed six pounds, seven ounces, and has been named Hailie Jade Palmer. She has one brother, Gunner Palmer.

Grandparents are Timothy and Chevonna Waddell of Walnut Ridge and Rebecca Price of Pocahontas.

Cole - Goforth

Ken and Vickie Cole of Hoxie have announced the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Tammy Marie Cole, to Zachariah Robert Shayne Goforth, son of Robert Goforth and Sharon Goforth, both of Batesville.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of the late Son and Betty Cole and the late M.W. and Dorothy Strong.

The prospective groom is the grandson of Robert Lee and Vetola Goforth, Henry Tuten and Wanda Tuten, all of Batesville.

The couple will exchange vows on July 26, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament in Jonesboro. A reception will follow the ceremony in the Blessed Sacrament Parish Hall.

All family and friends are invited to attend.

Leo Coleman Bailey

Leo Coleman Bailey, 97, died July 20, 2014, while a resident of the veteran's home in Mexico, Mo.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annell; a son; and three great-grandchildren.

Survivors include a sister, two sons, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Funeral is Friday at 10 a.m. at the Velvet Ridge Church of Christ in Bald Knob with Ted Knight officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Ward Cemetery in Strawberry.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Searcy-McEuen Funeral Home in Searcy.

Jodi Renee Belback

Jodi Renee Belback, 28, of Hoxie, died July 17, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born May 14, 1986, in Omaha, Neb., she was the daughter of John Penry and Norma Belback. She worked as a cook and was of the Baptist belief.

Survivors include her mother, Norma Belback, Hoxie; two brothers, Robert Bennett, Ravenden, and Michael Belback, Santa Ana, Calif.; and a sister, Tammy Avino and husband Steven, Omaha, Neb.

Graveside service was Monday at 10 a.m. at Oak Forest Cemetery with Rev. Willie Wilbanks officiating. Bryan Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Billy Dean, Matt Bullard, Steven Avino, George Scales, Robert Bennett and Gunner Bennett.

Velma Boyd

Velma Boyd, 91, of Glenwood, formerly of Poughkeepsie, died July 16, 2014, at a Glenwood nursing home.

Born Oct. 28, 1922, at Alicia, she was the daughter of Jim and Pearl Chastain.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Boyd; four brothers, Edward Chastain, Maxie Chastain, Frank Chastain and Sam George Jr.; and a grandson, Donald Boyd.

Survivors include eight sons, William "Bill" Boyd and James Boyd, both of Glenwood, Harold Boyd, Cave City, Winston "Denny" Boyd and Royce Boyd, both of Poughkeepsie, Bernard Boyd, Smithville, Michael Boyd, Kirby, and Johnny Boyd, Amity; a brother, D.B. Chastain, Piggott; 20 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Saturday at 2 p.m. at Qualls Funeral Home in Cave City with Harold Boyd officiating. Burial was in Old Lebanon Cemetery near Lynn.

Pallbearers were grandsons: Stephen Boyd, Joshua Boyd, Frank Boyd, David Boyd, Jonathan Boyd, Kenny Boyd, Billy Boyd and Bobby Rhodes.

Zaxton Nathanal Dickson

Zaxton Nathanal Dickson, six-month-old son of Kara Dickson and Nathanal Urlacher of Walnut Ridge, died July 19, 2014, at his home.

Born Jan. 24, 2014, at Newport, he was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandparents and paternal great-grandfather.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his siblings, Zebediah and Zoey Dickson, both of the home; grandparents, Sandra Dickson, Walnut Ridge and David and Vanessa Morse, Powhatan; and Uncle Cliff and Aunt Sara Farmer, Walnut Ridge.

Funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home with Matthew Morse and Cliff Farmer officiating. Burial will be private.

Visitation is Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

Edna Harrell

Edna Modene McCarroll "Dene" Harrell of Gladstone, Mo., passed away peacefully on June 15, 2014.

She was born Oct. 22, 1931, to Cora (Simpson) and Clyde McCarroll of Black Rock, the second of three daughters.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Max P. Harrell; and her son, Stephen C. Harrell.

She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Harrell; son-in law, Thomas Imig; her grandchildren, Cory Imig (Craig Howard) and Matthew Imig (Caitlin Winterfeld); and her great-granddaughter, Addison Winter Imig.

She retired from Colgate Palmolive in 1989. She lived her life with a strong work ethic and lifelong support and care for her family.

We are grateful to Galway Home and Grace Hospice for providing care and support in her final days.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at Oak Forest Cemetery in Black Rock.

Joseph Martin Hightower

Captain Joseph Martin Hightower, 89, of Walnut Ridge, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2014.

Born in Memphis, he was a retired master pilot with American River Transportation Company. He had lived in Walnut Ridge for the past 10 years and also lived in Paris, Tenn.

Mr. Hightower, the husband of Perneica Ann Hightower, is also survived by his children, Danny Michael Hightower Sr. of Missouri, Sharon Leah Stevens, Chip McJunkin, Lori McGinnis, David Lynn Hightower, Sara Elizabeth Pope and William Ray Hightower, all of Tennessee, and Joseph Martin Hightower Jr, William Eugene Kincade, Michael Ray Kincade, Georgia Ann Robertson and Jenny Lynne May, all of Arkansas; 25 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Marion and Olga Lee Chapman Hightower; brothers, Thomas O'Conner, Captain George "Chink" Hightower and Captain Calvin E. Hightower; and a sister-in-law, Frankie Clair Hightower.

Funeral is today at 1 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, with visitation beginning at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens.

Joe lived a life of vision, excellence and passion. He shared his love of music, gospel, country and patriotic songs, with family and friends. Joe desired the world be a better place than he found it, which is perhaps his greatest legacy of all. In the river towboat industry, Joe is a revered, respected and renowned pilot and captain and a beloved colleague and friend. He was a Christian and loved our Lord above all.

Bess Holm

Bess Gardner Croom Holm, 104, of Walnut Ridge, died July 16, 2014, at Lawrence Hall Nursing Center.

Born Sept. 20, 1909, in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of Worley and Susan Penn Gardner. She was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County, a homemaker and was of the Baptist belief.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Floyd Croom and Arthur Holm; and a son, Gardner Croom.

Survivors include three daughters, Fae Skinfill, Jonesboro, Thelma Sue Harvey, Rockford, Ill., and Mary Janette Morgan, Lynn; 12 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral was Saturday at 3 p.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home in Lynn with Terell Neely officiating. Burial was in Dry Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Sam Morgan, Laddie Morgan, Freddie Wayne Morgan, Bud Saffell, Danny Morgan and Shawn Morgan. Honorary pallbearers were Brock Morgan, Houston Morgan, Jake Morgan, Frog Mitchell and Ralph Brown.

Rubye Goodwin Quenin

Rubye Goodwin Quenin, 91, died July 15, 2014, at the New Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care in Schertz, Texas.

Born Aug. 23, 1922, at Lauratown, she was the daughter of John and Fannie Phillips Goodwin. She and her husband lived in Bella Vista before moving to Texas in 2010.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh G. Quenin; and her siblings.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service was Tuesday at 9:30 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio. Goetz Funeral Home of Seguin, Texas, had charge of arrangements.

Jewel Rose

Jewel Rose, 92, of Rogersville, Mo., formerly of Walnut Ridge, died July 16, 2014.

Born Aug. 21, 1921, in Pocahontas, she was the daughter of J.T. and Mae Hunter. She served in the Coast Guard during World War II and was stationed in New York, Washington State and Washington, D.C. After the war, she and her husband moved to Walnut Ridge, where she lived for 50 years before moving to Missouri.

She was also a member of First Baptist Church, the Walnut Ridge Garden Club and the Walnut Ridge Quilt Club. She delivered Meals on Wheels while in her mid-80s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, P.K. Rose, whom she married July 14, 1942.

Survivors include a son, Larry Rose and wife Connie, Rogersville, Mo.; a daughter, Lisa Cuneo and husband Gerardo, Hallandale Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was Sunday at 4 p.m. at Lawrence Memorial Park with Robert Combs officiating. Bryan Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Gerardo Cuneo, Houston Hart, Paul Tyler, Ron Hagen, Jarrod Rose and Blaine LaRue.

Billy Keith Wilburn

Billy Keith Wilburn, 63, of Hoxie, died July 20, 2014, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Born Nov. 24, 1950, in Galesburg, Ill., he lived most of his life in Lawrence County. He was a farmhand and was of the Pentecostal belief.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Betty Howard Wilburn.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Jones Wilburn; a son, Marty Wilburn and wife Samantha, Hardy; a daughter, Robin Wilburn, of the home; four brothers, Doug Wilburn and wife Norma, Hoxie, David Wilburn and wife Pasha, Walnut Ridge, Johnny Wilburn and wife Sandy, Paragould, and Jimmy Wilburn and wife Martha, Clover Bend; three sisters, Lavesta Wicks, Illinois, Connie Williams and husband Jay, Idaho, and Peggy Colley and husband Rick, Hoxie; his stepmother, Onia Wilburn, Walnut Ridge; and three grandchildren, Candyce Baldridge, Bentley Wilburn and Zakkary Wilburn.

Visitation is today from 1-2 p.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home in Walnut Ridge.

Kaye Starling Wright

Kaye Starling Wright, 66, formerly of Hoxie, died July 14, 2014, in Jonesboro.

Born Dec. 25, 1947, at Delaplaine, she was a lifelong resident of Lawrence County. She had worked at Miller Golf Bag Co. and for the City Public Works Department of Jonesboro. She was affiliated with the Hoxie Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Bathna Smelscher Starling; a brother, Rupert Starling; two sisters, Joan Lambert and Oveida Beck; and a grandson, Patric Hefner.

Survivors include two daughters, Cindy Schweitzer and husband David, Jonesboro, and Deanna Hefner and husband Mike, Hardy; a brother, Fred Starling and wife Margie, Lauratown; four sisters, Joyce Bliss and husband Ben and Oretta Starling, all of Illinois, Oneida Sullinger, Walnut Ridge, and Portia Starling, Texas; a granddaughter, Suzanna Smith and husband Mike, Hardy; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Smith, McKayla Smith and Scott Smith.

Funeral was Wednesday, July 16, at 11 a.m. at House-Gregg Funeral Home with A.J. Stracener officiating. Burial was in Lawrence Memorial Park.

Pallbearers were Gary Pruitt, Kevin Wright, Mike Wright, Heath Gipson, Tim Starling and Chris Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Hunter Smith, McKayla Smith, Scott Smith and employees of the City Public Works Department of Jonesboro.
