Sunnie Cunningham, a member of the Walnut Ridge Bobcat and Jonesboro Storm (Junior Olympic) volleyball teams, recently traveled to Oahu, Hawaii, to compete in the NoKaOi Volleyball Showcase at KeKuhaupio High School.
Sunnie was selected based on her performance with the Jonesboro Storm and was eventually selected as captain of Team Arkansas for the tournament.
The daughter of Jeremy and Stormy Cunningham, she said she could not thank her parents enough for allowing her to be a part of such an amazing experience.
"It was something I will never forget!" she said. "I'm so glad I got to experience it with my mom, Stephanie and the great group of girls I met while there!"
Stephanie Davis of Walnut Ridge accompanied Stormy and Sunnie on the trip.
The team saw success in the showcase, defeating Ohio/Minnesota and Wisconsin to advance to the semifinals. Their run ended with a three-set loss to Nebraska.
Other members of the team were Kait Williams of Malvern, Jeena Bell Jewett of Cave City, Madison Taylor, Kaylee Crowl and Taylor Blevins, all of Batesville, Blair McClanahan of Wynne, Allison Vang and Maddy Frazior, both of Little Rock, and Kaydyn Truitt of Springdale. They were coached by Ray Green, head volleyball coach at Lyon College.
In addition to participating in the showcase, the girls and their guests enjoyed many activities including snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, sightseeing at Pali Lookout, surfing lessons and a catamaran ride at Waikiki beach, visiting Paradise Cove, driving along the coast line to the North Shore and visiting the Pearl Harbor Memorial.
"I would definitely encourage others to participate in any event that would allow you to go to a place like this and play the sport you love," Sunnie said. "There are so many great things we did but I would say besides volleyball the best was snorkeling and swimming with the sea turtles! It was awesome!"
