Craighead Electric Cooperative completed an upgrade to its infrastructure on Tuesday, causing a temporary outage for some customers in Lawrence County.
Advance notice was given through mail and email to those who were affected by the shutdown.
"We work very hard to keep your electric service as reliable as possible, so it's never an easy decision to perform a planned outage such as this," Bryan Duncan, CEO of Craighead Electric, said in the notice to customers. "The upgrade being performed will improve long-term service reliability and help us meet the future needs of our growing community."
The shutdown allowed the cooperative to upgrade the line voltage from 7620 to 14400.
In order to perform the upgrade, transformers had to be unhooked for the lines to be reenergized with the new voltage. Once it was determined there were no issues, they began to restore power.
The outage was projected to be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but by 11 a.m. many were already seeing their power restored.
