WR clinches conference title
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat baseball team clinched the 2A-2 conference championship with a 17-1 rout of Pangburn on April 22 at Stewart Park.
The Bobcats made short work of the Tigers, scoring four runs in the first inning, eight in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth.
Lane Kennedy led the offensive onslaught going 4-for-4 at the plate, with four RBIs and scoring two runs. Layne Ditto batted 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and scored three runs. Cole Hicks was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored four runs.
Will Weir went 2-for-2, including a double, with three RBIs and scored a run. Cash Lee had a double, an RBI and scored two runs. Drake Smelser had one hit, and Baron Estes scored two runs. Martin Crisler, Michael Bounds and Drake Smith each tallied one run.
Ditto pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing one run on five hits, with three strikeouts.
The Bobcats concluded conference play on April 23 at Imboden with a hard-earned 4-2 win over the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds. Walnut Ridge wrapped up 2A-2 play with a 13-1 league record.
Walnut Ridge broke on top with a run in the first inning, but the Greyhounds evened the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Walnut Ridge took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and held on for the victory, as Bocbat pitching limited Sloan-Hendrix to only one run in the final three innings.
Kennedy was once again a key contributor at the plate, batting 3-for-4, including a double, with an RBI and scored a run. Smelser went 2-for-4, including a triple, with one RBI. Weir had a double, a single and an RBI. Lee added a double and scored a run. Ditto had an RBI, and Estes had a double. Bounds and Hicks each scored a run.
Weir pitched all seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits, and struck out four batters.
The Westside Warriors took a 4-0 lead in the fourth inning and held on for a 4-3 win over Walnut Ridge on Friday.
The Warriors jumped on top of the Cats with a three-run first inning and added a run in the top of the fifth.
Walnut Ridge got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kennedy blasted a three-run homer, which also scored Ditto and Estes. Westside pitching shut the Bobcats out in the seventh inning to hang on for the win.
Kennedy finished 1-for-3, with three RBIs and scored a run. Ditto went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Lee added a hit, and Estes scored a run.
Luke Wall started on the mound for Walnut Ridge. He allowed two earned runs on eight hits and recorded two strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Estes pitched the final inning in relief.
Walnut Ridge defeated the Marked Tree Indians 12-5 in non-conference action on April 21 at Stewart Park.
With the Bobcats leading 2-1, Marked Tree tallied three runs in the top of the third inning to move in front 4-2. The Indians' lead was short-lived, however, as Walnut Ridge answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to regain the advantage at 5-4.
The Bobcats stretched the lead to 7-4 in the fourth inning, then answered a Marked Tree run with a five-run fifth inning. Neither team scored in the final two innings.
Ditto had the hot bat, with three doubles, three RBIs and scored four runs. Hicks went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Smith went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Weir had a hit and two RBIs. Estes had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Kennedy had a double and scored a run. Lee scored two runs, and Crisler added one run.
Wall started on the mound and recorded one strikeout before giving way to Estes in the second inning. Estes earned the win in relief, allowing five runs on two hits and striking out six.
