WR records three conference wins

The Walnut Ridge Bobcats enjoyed a successful week on the baseball diamond with three wins in 2A-2 conference play. Their only setback was a 5-2 loss to Class 4A Pocahontas.

White County Central

Walnut Ridge hosted White County Central and Salem in a doubleheader at Stewart Park on Friday.

The Bobcats, playing as the visiting team, defeated WCC 2-1 in the opener when Cole Hicks delivered a bases-loaded single to score Drake Smelser in the top of the eighth inning. Pitcher Layne Ditto held the Bears scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.

Ditto surrendered just four hits, while recording 10 strikeouts, to earn the complete-game victory.

Hicks went 2-for-3 on the day and had the game-winning RBI. Ditto had a hit and an RBI, and Cash Lee was 2-for-2 at the plate. Drake Smith and Smelser scored the Cats' runs.

Salem

The Bobcats had an easier time in the nightcap, hammering Salem 11-1 in five innings.

Walnut Ridge broke on top with a run in the bottom of the first, then posted back-to-back five-run innings in the second and third to take charge of the game. The Greyhounds could only manage one run in the top of the fifth.

Ditto went 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in four runs. Martin Crisler had one hit, three RBIs and scored two runs. Lee was 2-for-2 and scored two runs. Chase Baker was 2-for-2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Smelser was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Baron Estes went 2-for-2 and scored a run, while Smith scored two runs.

Will Weir pitched all five innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit, while striking out five.

Pocahontas

The Bobcats squared off against the Pocahontas Redskins on Thursday at Williams Baptist College.

Walnut Ridge took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. That score held until Pocahontas took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Walnut Ridge scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to close to within 3-2. The Redskins added two big runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead to 5-2 and held the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom of the inning to close out the win.

Lee, Weir, Hicks and Luke Wall each had singles for Walnut Ridge. Ditto had an RBI, and Hicks scored both the Bobcats' runs.

Estes pitched five and one-third innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, with four strikeouts. Weir pitched one inning and allowed two runs on one hit, and Michael Bounds pitched two-thirds of an inning.

Cotter

Walnut Ridge defeated Cotter 12-1 at Cotter on April 9.

The Bobcats scored two runs in the first and third innings and four runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Estes had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3, with three RBIs and scoring two runs. Hicks went 3-for-5 and scored four runs. Lane Kennedy had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run. Ditto had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs. Lee had two hits and scored a run. Weir had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Chase Baker had a hit and an RBI, and Wall had an RBI and scored a run. Will Spargo had a hit, and Crisler had an RBI.

Wall earned the complete-game win on the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits, with seven strikeouts.
