Cats compete in Classic
The Walnut Ridge Bobcat baseball team participated in the Hollister Baseball Classic in Missouri on Friday and Saturday.
The Bobcats dropped the three games they played in the Classic, losing to Prairie Grove 5-1 and Carl Junction 13-3 on Friday, and falling to Reeds Spring 8-3 on Saturday.
Despite being held hitless, the Bobcats led 1-0 after six innings. Prairie Grove scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the win. Cole Hicks scored the Bobcats' only run.
Baron Estes allowed five runs on 10 hits in six and one-third innings of work. He also recorded four walks and six strikeouts. Will Weir walked one batter in two-thirds of an inning.
Carl Junction scored eight runs in the seventh inning to break open a close game and defeat the Bobcats 13-3.
Walnut Ridge jumped on top 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs scored five unanswered runs, with two in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth, before the Bobcats added a run in the bottom of the fifth to close to within 5-3. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but Carl Junction's offense exploded for eight runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Most of the Bulldogs' runs were unearned, as the Bobcats committed six errors in the contest.
At the plate for Walnut Ridge, Weir went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Layne Ditto and Hicks each had a hit and an RBI. Cash Lee and Chase Baker each contributed a hit and scored a run, while Drake Smelser also scored a run.
Cash Lee pitched one-third of an inning, allowing one run on two hits. Ditto pitched five innings and surrendered seven runs, only three of which were earned, on nine hits. He also walked three and struck out three. Weir allowed five runs (only one earned) on two hits in one-third of an inning.
The Bobcats closed out their Missouri trip with an 8-3 loss to the Reeds Spring Wolves on Saturday.
Trailing 1-0, Walnut Ridge tied the game with a run in the top of the third inning, only to see the Wolves answer with five in the bottom of the frame, and two more in the fourth for an 8-1 lead. The Bobcats managed two runs in the final inning, but couldn't overcome the Wolves' lead.
Lee led Walnut Ridge at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and scoring two runs. Martin Crisler had a hit and scored a run. Ditto and Weir each added a hit.
Michael Bounds pitched two innings, allowing two runs on three hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. Weir took the mound for three innings and allowed six runs on five hits. Luke Wall pitched one inning and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.
Walnut Ridge started the week with a 10-0 shutout over county foe Sloan-Hendrix in 2A-2 conference action.
The Bobcats scored a run in the first inning, six in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.
Hicks had one hit, a three-run home run that keyed the Bobcats big second inning. Lee went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored two runs. Ditto batted 2-for-3 and scored a run. Wall and Treyton Johnson each had one hit and scored two runs, and Smelser had a hit.
Lane Kennedy pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing just one hit and registering three strikeouts.
