WR competes in Classic
The Walnut Ridge High School baseball team competed in the Xtra Innings Classic in Jonesboro last weekend, defeating Brookland and falling to Gosnell.
The Bobcats exploded for seven runs in the first inning, then held off a late Brookland rally for a 7-5 win on Saturday.
Brookland scored single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to cut Walnut Ridge's lead to 7-3. The Bearcats plated two more runs in the seventh inning before the Bobcats recorded the final out.
Offensively for Walnut Ridge, Lane Kennedy went 2-for-3, with an RBI and scored a run. Baron Estes batted 2-for-2, with two RBIs and scored a run. Cash Lee and Will Weir each had a hit and scored a run. Layne Ditto and Luke Wall each had a hit and an RBI. Michael Bounds and Cole Hicks each scored a run. Chase Baker added an RBI, and Treyton Johnson scored a run.
Ditto pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and registered nine strikeouts.
The Gosnell Pirates scored a pair of late runs to edge Walnut Ridge 3-2 on Friday.
Walnut Ridge led 2-1 after five innings before Gosnell scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 3-2 lead, then held the Bobcats scoreless in the bottom of the seventh.
Weir and Wall each had a hit and an RBI for Walnut Ridge. Lee and Hicks each contributed base hits, while Estes had a double. Ditto and Baker each scored a run.
Weir allowed two earned runs and five hits and had four strikeouts. Ditto also saw action on the mound.
The Bobcats went on the road and defeated the Pangburn Tigers 12-1 in 2A-2 conference action on March 25.
Walnut Ridge scored in every inning, plating two runs in the first, one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Pangburn's only run came on a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bobcats added a run in the fifth and four in the sixth to close out the game.
Weir led the Bobcats' offensive attack, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and scoring one run. Estes went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and scored a run. Kennedy went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Lee went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored four runs.
Smelser had a hit and drove in two runs, while Johnson had a hit and scored a run. Ditto had an RBI and Baker scored a run.
Estes allowed just three hits to earn the complete-game victory.
The Bobcats improved to 4-0 in conference play and 7-1 overall.
Walnut Ridge shut out the Tuckerman Bulldogs 9-0 at Tuckerman on March 24.
